Differentiation of Isomeric Anilines & Pyridines by Targeted Molecular Rotational Resonance Spectroscopy & Mass Spectrometry

Summary

Molecular rotational resonance (MRR) spectroscopy allows for the precise identification of small molecules in complex mixtures. Because MRR spectra are determined by the rotational constants of the analyte — which depend on the distribution of mass within a molecule — MRR is highly suitable for differentiating isomeric compounds. As a result, MRR has strong potential as an alternative or complementary technique to mass spectrometry, which often struggles to distinguish isomers.

  • IsoMRR detects transitions between ground and excited rotational energy.

  • Mass spectrometry and IsoMRR compare in the analysis of aniline and pyridine mixtures.

  • IsoMRR and DFT are used to identify MRR frequencies.

  • IsoMRR unambiguously identifies and distinguishes the isomeric compounds without chromatographic separation.
